4-H Clubs & Affiliated Organizations
4-H is a U.S.-based network of youth organizations focused on empowering young people to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development. The organization's name is derived from the four Hs in its original motto: head, heart, hands, and health.
Overview
4-H programs are administered by the Cooperative Extension Service, part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These programs are designed to engage youth and adults in intentional, experiential, and inquiry-based learning, fostering positive youth development across different disciplines, including citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology.
History
The first appearance of the term "4-H Club" in a federal document was in "Organization and Results of Boys' and Girls' Club Work," by Oscar Herman Benson and Gertrude L. Warren, in 1920. The organization was formally established as part of the Cooperative Extension Service in 1914 through the Smith-Lever Act. This act recognized and funded various boys' and girls' clubs involved with agriculture, home economics, and related subjects across the United States.
Mission and Activities
4-H's mission is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility, and life skills in youth through hands-on, experiential learning. The organization provides a broad menu of programs that cater to diverse interests, from STEM and agriculture to arts and civic engagement. Youth in 4-H participate in projects, community service, competitions, conferences, and camps, all guided by adult mentors who facilitate positive relationships and learning experiences.
Structure
4-H operates through a network of more than 100 public universities and thousands of local clubs across the United States. The organization also receives support from the National 4-H Council, a non-profit entity that contributes to program development and funding. Additionally, partnerships with various foundations and organizations help expand 4-H's reach and impact in areas such as financial literacy, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Membership and Reach
With nearly six million members aged 5 to 21 years old across the U.S., 4-H is a significant force in youth development. Besides its extensive domestic presence, 4-H has affiliated programs in over 80 countries globally. The organization emphasizes inclusivity, ensuring access and equity for all young people, regardless of their backgrounds or locations.
Values and Pledge
4-H's values are encapsulated in the head, heart, hands, and health motto, which guides members in developing clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service, and better living practices. The 4-H pledge reflects these values, emphasizing personal growth and community service.
Partnerships
4-H collaborates with numerous organizations to enhance its programs. Partnerships include those with foundations, educational institutions, and corporations, which support initiatives in financial literacy, STEM education, and community development. These partnerships play a crucial role in expanding 4-H's impact both locally and internationally.
Impact
Through its commitment to positive youth development, 4-H empowers young people to become leaders and agents of change in their communities. The organization's hands-on approach to learning and its emphasis on mentorship help foster a new generation of responsible, compassionate, and innovative individuals.
