Early American Pattern Glass Society
The Early American Pattern Glass Society (EAPGS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the collection, appreciation, study, preservation, and documentation of early American pattern glassware. The society plays a significant role in promoting the historical importance and cultural significance of this type of glassware within American life.
History and Mission
Established in the early 1990s, the EAPGS first held its annual meeting in April 1995. By the following year, the membership had grown substantially, indicating a strong interest in the preservation and study of early American pattern glass. The society's mission involves fostering a community of collectors, historians, and enthusiasts who work together to identify, document, and conserve various patterns of early American glassware.
Database and Research
One of the notable achievements of the EAPGS is its extensive database, which by 2022 included over 7,000 patterns and more than 60,000 photographs contributed by active members. This repository serves as a valuable resource for researchers and collectors, providing comprehensive information on pattern names, shapes, and motifs. The database is constantly updated as new patterns are discovered and verified, making it a crucial tool for understanding the evolution and diversity of early American pattern glass.
Early American Pattern Glass
Early American pattern glass, often referred to as "pressed glass," was produced primarily between 1850 and 1910. It was made in sets, featuring recognizable patterns that were repeated across different pieces, making it easily identifiable. The heyday of this glassware was during the late 19th century, particularly from 1875 to 1900. The patterns were often varied, with many produced in clear glass, but also in colors such as blue, amber, yellow, and green during the mid-1880s.
Conservation Efforts
The EAPGS supports efforts to study, preserve, and document early American pattern glass, contributing significantly to the field of glass studies. By focusing on the historical context and cultural significance of this glassware, the society helps raise awareness about the importance of preserving historical artifacts and cultural heritage.
Community Engagement
The society encourages community involvement through its networking platforms, where members can share knowledge, seek identification assistance for unknown patterns, and contribute to the ongoing development of the database. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the history and significance of early American pattern glass are preserved for future generations.
