AMVETS
Overview

AMVETS, formerly known as the American Veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, is a nonprofit organization in the United States. It was founded in 1944, primarily by veterans of World War II who sought to create an organization specifically for their generation. The name "AMVETS" was coined by newspaper headline writers, as a shortened form of the original name, and was officially adopted by the organization[1][2].

History

AMVETS began as a collection of independent veterans clubs across the U.S. These clubs came together in Kansas City, Missouri, in December 1944, to form a national organization. Their mission included promoting world peace, preserving the American way of life, and helping veterans achieve their potential[1][3].

The first national convention was held in Chicago in October 1945, and in 1946, AMVETS petitioned Congress for a federal charter. This charter was granted on July 23, 1947, when President Harry S. Truman signed Public Law 216[2][3]. Over the years, the charter has been amended to include veterans from the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, as well as subsequent military operations[1][3].

Mission and Activities

AMVETS focuses on enhancing and safeguarding entitlements for all American veterans who have served honorably. The organization aims to improve the quality of life for these veterans, their families, and the communities they live in through advocacy, leadership, and various services[5].

Key activities include:

  • Legislative Advocacy: AMVETS works to promote policies and laws benefiting veterans.
  • Veterans Services: Offers career assistance, education support, and mental health resources to help veterans transition to civilian life.
  • Community Support: Engages in local community initiatives, scholarships, and partnerships to address unique challenges faced by veterans.
  • Honoring Veterans: Organizes events and ceremonies to honor the service of veterans and military personnel[3][5].
Membership and Structure

Membership in AMVETS is open to anyone who has honorably served (or is currently serving) in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves, from World War II to the present[2]. The organization has over 250,000 members across the United States[5]. AMVETS is structured with national headquarters, state departments, and local posts, facilitating grassroots involvement in veteran support initiatives[5].

Affiliate Organizations

AMVETS also includes affiliate organizations like the AMVETS National Service Foundation, which was established in 1948 to assist veterans in their readjustment to civilian life. This foundation provides critical support for veterans navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs benefits system[4].
