Camp Hill Fire Company No. 1
Overview

The Camp Hill Fire Company No. 1 is a nonprofit fire department organization located in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Established in 1909, it serves as a vital part of the local emergency services, providing fire protection and rescue operations within the Borough of Camp Hill.

History
Founding and Early Years

The formation of the Camp Hill Fire Company No. 1 began on May 5, 1908, when community citizens met to organize a volunteer fire company due to concerns about the lack of fire protection in the borough. This meeting was held at "Squire" Henry N. Bowman's residence. The first formal meeting of the newly organized Fire Company took place on June 16, 1908, with forty-seven charter members. H.S. Musser was elected as the company's first foreman, and John M. Major became its first president.

The company acquired a chemical fire engine from Larre Fire Department, which was initially housed in Frank Cooper's barn. Bowman donated an old school bell to alert volunteers of potential fires, and it was placed on the roof of Cooper's barn.

By May 25, 1909, the company was ready to purchase land for a new fire station. The cornerstone of this new facility was laid on July 24, 1909, and the first meeting in the new quarters occurred on December 7, 1909. The fire station also hosted various community activities, including Borough council meetings starting in 1911 and school board rentals for classroom use in 1912.

Modern Developments

Over the years, the company has continued to evolve and improve its capabilities. Notable milestones include the installation of an air whistle and compressor in 1917 and the purchase of its first motorized fire apparatus in 1925. The company transitioned from using the title "Foreman" to "Fire Chief," with A.C. Blaine being the first elected Fire Chief.

In the mid-20th century, the company adopted advanced communication technologies. Two-way radios were installed in fire apparatus by 1955, marking a significant shift towards modern communication methods in firefighting.

The Camp Hill Fire Ladies Auxiliary was formed in January 1952, which has consistently supported the company through various projects. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the company introduced self-contained breathing apparatus and aluminized proximity suits, enhancing firefighter safety.

Operations
Fire Services and Apparatus

Today, the Camp Hill Fire Company No. 1 operates a range of fire apparatus, including an engine, ladder truck, rescue unit, and traffic control vehicle. These units are crucial for responding to fire and rescue emergencies throughout the borough.
