Description

Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor

The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural and historical significance of the Lincoln Highway, specifically focusing on the 200-mile stretch within south-central Pennsylvania. Established in 1996, the organization was officially recognized by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge in 1995 as one of the state's Heritage Areas, which are administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Mission

The mission of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor is to identify, conserve, promote, and interpret the cultural, historical, and natural resources associated with the Lincoln Highway. This includes inspiring travel along the highway and educating people about its impact on American history. The Lincoln Highway, established in 1913, was the first transcontinental road in the United States and played a significant role in shaping America's transportation infrastructure and cultural landscape.

Activities and Projects

The organization is involved in various projects aimed at preserving Lincoln Highway-related landmarks and promoting educational initiatives. Some notable projects include:

  • Restoration of Historic Landmarks: The Corridor has been involved in restoring iconic roadside attractions, such as the 1927 Coffee Pot in Bedford.
  • Educational Programs: It develops educational materials and activities for students, such as creating book covers related to the Lincoln Highway, a Road Trip board game, and exploring the roadside giants along the corridor.
  • Museum and Exhibits: The organization hosts the Lincoln Highway Experience museum, the largest museum in the U.S. dedicated to the Lincoln Highway, located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Additionally, it manages the 200-mile Lincoln Highway Roadside Museum.
  • Tourism Promotion: The Corridor offers a driving guide for travelers interested in exploring the original Lincoln Highway, aiming to increase tourism and appreciation for the region's history.

Funding and Support

The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor relies on a combination of competitive grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, support from private foundations, and assistance from tourism grants like the Westmoreland County Tourism Grant Program. Individual donations also play a crucial role in funding the organization's activities.
