There’s only a few weeks until the World Premiere of Theatre Ariel’s final Salon of the season, The Goldsmith by Sharone Sayegh. It’s a story of love and family – and a legacy of gold and history woven through generations. To get you ready for performances beginning April 26th, we’re bringing you… A BRIEF TIMELINE OF GOLD! 4000 BCE - Gold begins to be used to fashionably decorate objects. 1500 BCE - The Shekel coin – made of an alloy of gold and silver – becomes the standard in the Middle East. 300 BCE - Jewish and Greek Alchemists of ancient Alexandria work to spin gold out of base metals. (Spoiler alert: they fail.) 1377 CE - Great Britain switches to a gold- and silver-based monetary system. 415 years later, the United States does, too. 1848 - 1855 CE - Jewish immigrants get in on the gold rush. Levi Strauss supplies them, striking denim gold. Miners establish Congregation Emanu-El, San Francisco’s first synagogue. 1965 CE - U.S. astronauts use gold-coated visors during spacewalks to protect their eyes from direct sunlight. (Talk about bling!) 1971 CE - The U.S. effectively switches from a gold-based monetary system to a fiat one. 2024 - 2025 CE - Theatre Ariel warms hearts and spreads joy when it helps develop and premiere Sharone Sayegh’s The Goldsmith.
