Kappa Delta Sorority

Kappa Delta Sorority (ΚΔ), commonly referred to as KD or Kaydee, was the first sorority founded at the State Female Normal School (now Longwood University), in Farmville, Virginia, on October 23, 1897[1][4]. It is recognized as one of the "Farmville Four" sororities, alongside Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha, all of which are part of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC)[1].

Founders

The sorority was established by four college students: Lenora Ashmore Blackiston, Mary Sommerville Sparks Hendrick, Julia Gardiner Tyler Wilson, and Sara Turner White. Blackiston initiated the idea of forming a sorority, while Hendrick, at age 23, was the oldest founder and remained at the State Normal until 1902. Wilson designed the Kappa Delta badge, and White often hosted Founders Day celebrations at her home[1].

Mission and Values

Kappa Delta Sorority is committed to building confidence in its members and inspiring them to action through lifelong friendships. The organization's mission emphasizes encouraging integrity and honor, fostering confidence and leadership, and promoting community engagement and personal growth[4][5]. The values of Kappa Delta include Friendship & Loyalty, Personal Integrity, Lifelong Learning, and Selfless Service[4][5].

Symbols and Philanthropy

The sorority's official symbols are the nautilus shell and dagger, and its mascots are the teddy bear and katydid. The official colors are olive green and pearl white, with the white rose as its flower. The jewels associated with Kappa Delta are the diamond, emerald, and pearl[1][3][4].

Kappa Delta supports several national philanthropies, including the Girl Scouts of the USA and Prevent Child Abuse America. Historically, the sorority has also supported the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU and Orthopedic Research Awards. Locally, chapters often engage in additional community service projects[1][3].

Structure and Chapters

As of recent data, Kappa Delta has over 300,000 initiated members, with 168 active collegiate chapters and more than 200 alumnae chapters across North America[4][5]. The organization is led by an elected National Council, supported by hundreds of volunteers and a professional staff[4][5].

Impact

Kappa Delta's philanthropic efforts are bolstered by contributions to the Kappa Delta Foundation, which supports scholarships, educational opportunities, and community outreach programs in addition to its national philanthropies. The organization's vision is to provide experiences that build confidence and inspire action through lifelong friendships[4][5].
