Athenian Berean Community Players

Overview

The Athenian Berean Community Players, commonly referred to as ABC Players, is a nonprofit community theater organization based in Athens, Ohio. Formed through the merger of the Athenian Players Theatre (APT) and the Berean Community Players (BCP) on March 18, 2009, the organization aims to promote community involvement in theater arts[1].

History

Berean Community Players

BCP was incorporated in 1973. Under the direction of Spencer Steenrod and Tony Coleman, it became a cultural hub in southeast Ohio, renowned for its productions. Musical directors like Katy McCoy and Mary Jane McKinley were particularly noted for their high-quality work[1].

Athenian Players Theatre

APT was conceived in the summer of 1992 by Joe Balding and Steve Haskins during a production of "On Golden Pond." The groundwork was laid at the Athens Unitarian Fellowship Hall on August 3, 1992. Its first production, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever," opened on December 10, 1992. APT operated as a nomadic theater for its first five years, hosting shows at various locations including the Unitarian Fellowship Hall and the Athens Middle School. In 1997, it began performing at the historic Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville[1].

Merger and Current Activities

After merging, ABC Players continued to use Stuart's Opera House as a primary venue. The organization's typical season includes three to five plays, often performed Thursday through Sunday in a single week or Friday through Sunday over two successive weeks. Sunday performances are usually matinee shows, while all others are evening performances[1].

Membership and Involvement

To become a member of ABC Players, one must express interest, be at least 14 years old, and pay an annual membership fee of $10. Families can join for $20. Membership benefits include participation in community theater activities, both on stage and behind the scenes[1].

Financial Support

ABC Players is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions and can be supported through various community programs, such as the Kroger Community Rewards[1]. Donations can also be made through platforms like GoFundMe[4].

Governance

The organization operates with annually elected officers who serve terms from September 1 to August 31. The bylaws of the organization, updated as recently as May 2024, outline its operational structure and community engagement policies[5].
