Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is a U.S. youth organization that has evolved significantly since its inception. It was founded on February 8, 1910, by William D. Boyce and is now known as Scouting America following a name change in 2025. The organization is part of the World Organization of the Scout Movement and serves more than 1 million youth participants across the United States and internationally.

Founding and Evolution

The BSA's early years were influenced by the British Scouting movement, which was established by Robert Baden-Powell. William D. Boyce was inspired to start the BSA after an encounter with a Boy Scout in London, which led him to purchase a copy of "Scouting for Boys," a foundational text for modern Scouting. The organization grew rapidly, incorporating other youth groups like the Woodcraft Indians and Sons of Daniel Boone into its structure.

Programs and Activities

The BSA offers a range of programs, including:

  • Cub Scouts: For youths aged 6 to 11.
  • Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts): A coeducational program for youths aged 11 to 17, focusing on character development, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership.
  • Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Exploring: Programs for young people aged 14 to 20, offering specialized skills and experiences.

The BSA emphasizes outdoor activities, community service, and leadership development through its eight methods of Scouting: ideals, patrol method, outdoor programs, advancement, association with adults, personal growth, leadership development, and the uniform. The organization owns several high-adventure bases, including Philmont Scout Ranch and Summit Bechtel Reserve, where Scouts can participate in extensive outdoor activities.

Mission and Values

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America, now Scouting America, is "to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law." The Scout Oath and Scout Law serve as guiding principles for members, emphasizing virtues such as trustworthiness, kindness, bravery, and reverence.

Challenges and Controversies

Throughout its history, the BSA faced challenges related to racial segregation, religious exclusivity, and policies regarding LGBTQ individuals. The organization has worked to address these issues, introducing coeducational programs and emphasizing inclusivity. However, its membership declined from a peak of over 4 million in the 1970s.

Rebranding to Scouting America

In 2024, the BSA announced a rebranding to Scouting America, with the name change officially taking effect on February 8, 2025. This change reflects the organization's evolving mission and programs while maintaining its core values and structure. The Scouts BSA program remains unchanged, serving as the flagship coeducational program for youths.

Legacy and Impact

The Boy Scouts of America, now Scouting America, has had a profound impact on American society and youth development. With over 130 million participants since its inception, the organization continues to shape young people into responsible citizens with strong character and leadership skills. Despite challenges, Scouting America remains one of the largest and most influential youth organizations in the United States.
