Milton Hershey School Alumni Association

The Milton Hershey School Alumni Association (MHSAA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1930, primarily focused on supporting alumni of the Milton Hershey School (MHS), as well as promoting the values and philanthropic intent of its founders, Milton and Catherine Hershey.

History

The MHSAA was founded under the initiative of George E. Copenhaver, who was the Superintendent of the Hershey Industrial School at the time (Milton Hershey School's former name). Arthur R. Whiteman, class of 1927, was appointed as the first president of the association. The initial meeting led to the formation of the organization's bylaws and the arrangement of a banquet for the first 50 members, held at the Hershey Inn in 1931[1][3].

The MHSAA serves multiple purposes, including fostering a sense of community among alumni, supporting current students, and upholding the principles set forth by Milton and Catherine Hershey in the Deed of Trust for the Milton Hershey School. • Cancer Care Program: Offers financial grants to alumni and their families dealing with cancer diagnoses.
• Helping Hands Program: Provides emergency assistance for basic needs such as housing, groceries, and transportation.
• Awards and Recognition: Honors alumni who embody the values taught by MHS.
• Commercial Business Auto Policy: Offers insurance coverage for seniors transitioning into careers[5].

Honorary Membership and Growth

The association introduced honorary membership in 1950, initially inducting Milton S. Hershey, George E. Copenhaver, and Prudence Copenhaver. Over the years, the organization has grown to include more than 11,849 alumni and operates multiple chapters. It supports a diverse membership base, including alumni, students, staff, and those connected to the MHS community[1][5].
