Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Colorado
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Colorado is a nonprofit organization that represents the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Colorado, with roots dating back to the mid-19th century during the Colorado gold rush era. The organization is part of a broader international fraternity known as Freemasonry.
History
Freemasonry in Colorado began with informal meetings among Masons who had gathered in the region, particularly around Auraria (now part of modern Denver). The first recorded informal meeting of Masons in what is now Colorado occurred on November 3, 1858[4][2]. This was followed by the establishment of the first Masonic Temple in the Gregory Diggings area of Gilpin County in June 1859[1][2]. The Grand Lodge of Colorado was formally established on August 2, 1861, through the charter of several lodges that had previously been chartered by other Grand Lodges[3][4].
Purpose
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Colorado aim to foster personal development, moral and ethical values, and community service among its members. Freemasonry emphasizes brotherly love, relief, and truth, with its members practicing the cardinal virtues of temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice[3][5]. Members engage in various charitable activities and community service projects, such as educational grants and support for local causes[4].
Structure
The organization is structured as a hierarchical system, with local lodges operating under the governance of the Grand Lodge of Colorado. As of recent times, the Grand Lodge oversees more than 104 lodges across the state, with a significant membership count[4]. The Grand Lodge is headed by a Grand Master elected by the fraternity's members, who plays a key role in guiding the organization's activities[4].
Activities
In addition to its internal lodge meetings and educational programs, the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Colorado participate in ceremonial events, such as cornerstone laying ceremonies for public buildings. The fraternity is also involved in various community outreach programs, aiming to enrich the lives of both members and the general public through service and education[3][4].
