National Exchange Club

The National Exchange Club is a nonprofit service organization that has been dedicated to serving communities in the United States and Puerto Rico since its inception. Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Michigan, the club was initially formed by businessmen seeking to "exchange" ideas about improving their community. The name "Exchange" was suggested by Charles A. Berkey, the founder.

History

The first local Exchange Club was established in Detroit, Michigan, in 1911, followed by the Exchange Club of Toledo, Ohio, in 1913. Subsequently, clubs were organized in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Cleveland, Ohio. These four clubs were among the first to be chartered by the National Exchange Club after it was formally organized as a nonprofit educational organization in 1917. In the same year, the National Exchange Club moved its headquarters to Toledo.

Programs of Service

The National Exchange Club focuses on three primary programs: Americanism, Youth Programs, and Community Service. These programs aim to promote patriotism and national pride, support youth development through scholarships and mentorship, and provide community service tailored to local needs. Additionally, the National Exchange Club has designated the Prevention of Child Abuse as its national project since 1979, working to raise awareness and prevent child maltreatment through public information materials and community partnerships.

Community Impact

Through its extensive network of over 700 local clubs and more than 21,000 members, the National Exchange Club plays a significant role in supporting communities nationwide. It empowers individuals to make a difference by connecting them with resources and like-minded people. The organization honors community leaders and public servants, supports veterans, and promotes educational initiatives.

Awards and Recognition

The National Exchange Club awards several honors to individuals making significant contributions to their communities, including the Book of Golden Deeds Award, ACE Award, Youth of the Year, and Citizenship Award. These recognitions highlight outstanding dedication to community service and leadership.

Organizational Structure

The National Exchange Club is structured into 31 districts and 12 regions across the United States, with each district headed by a district president. A national president oversees the entire organization, while local clubs are managed by a president, treasurer, and other board members.

Foundation

The National Exchange Club Foundation, Inc., founded in 1979, complements these efforts by focusing specifically on child abuse prevention through a network of Prevention of Child Abuse Centers. This foundation reinforces the organization's commitment to strengthening families and building safer communities.

Mission and Values

The mission of the National Exchange Club is to inspire communities to become better places to live, guided by core values of family, community, and country. Its vision is for a strong America, safe communities, and unified people, encapsulated in the motto "Unity for Service."
