Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas
Overview

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the principles of Freemasonry. This organization is one of the largest and most prominent Masonic governing bodies in the state of Texas.

History

The beginnings of Freemasonry in Texas date back to the early 19th century. In 1835, six Masons met under an oak tree near Brazoria, leading to the formation of the first Masonic lodge in Texas. They applied for and received a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, which later issued a charter for Holland Lodge No. 36, now known as Holland Lodge No. 1. Anson Jones, a notable figure in Texas history, served as the first Worshipful Master of this lodge.

Following the establishment of Holland Lodge, two more lodges were formed in Texas: Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine. These three lodges sent representatives to a convention in Houston, where they established the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas. Anson Jones was elected the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, which later became the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas after Texas's independence. When Texas became a state, the name was adjusted to the Grand Lodge of Texas.

Freemasonry in Texas

Freemasonry in Texas has been integral to the state's history, particularly during the Texas Revolution. Many Freemasons, including famous figures like James Bonham, James Bowie, David Crockett, and William Barrett Travis, fought at the Battle of the Alamo. These men's involvement in Masonry reflects the organization's role in fostering community and leadership.

Mission and Activities

The Grand Lodge of Texas focuses on personal development and community service. Its mission is to take good men and help them become better by promoting moral values and engaging in charitable activities. Members support various community initiatives, including programs for education, healthcare, and social welfare. The fraternity emphasizes its commitment to brotherly love, relief, and truth, guiding its members to live virtuous lives and contribute positively to society.
