First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 1, 1892, by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant women. The organization was established to provide financial security, particularly death and injury benefits, to protect families from the risks associated with industrial labor at a time when women's roles were limited[2][3].
Founding and Early Growth
The association was formally chartered in Ohio in 1899, allowing it to operate under the state's fraternal code. By year-end 1892, the organization had grown from $77 in assets and 9 members to $212 in assets and 95 members. The society selected St. Ann as its patron saint, and by 1899, membership had expanded to 1,859 women across 83 branches[2].
Expansion and Challenges
Throughout its history, FCSLA Life faced significant events such as the Great Depression. In response, the organization provided waivers to destitute families with Junior Order members. In 1933, President Frances Jakabcin died, and Helen Kocan succeeded her, leading the organization through challenging times[2].
Modern Developments
In the second half of the 20th century, FCSLA continued to grow. The name was changed to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association to avoid confusion with labor unions. By the 1960s, the organization had expanded its programs, including scholarship initiatives. In recent years, FCSLA has rebranded as FCSLA Life, emphasizing family, faith, and financial security while maintaining its Slovak heritage and Catholic values[3][5].
Achievements and Impact
FCSLA Life has achieved significant milestones. As of its 125th anniversary in 2017, the organization had over $900 million in assets and 115,000 members across 48 states and the District of Columbia. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO until 2025, FCSLA Life's assets and insurance in force each grew to over $1 billion. The organization has also been recognized for its community service and charitable activities[4][5].
Community Service and Leadership
FCSLA Life is known for its charitable initiatives and scholarships. It has awarded over 3,000 national scholarships and supported numerous community projects. The organization remains committed to upholding Catholic values and preserving Slovak traditions while providing financial security to its members[5].
