Dec My Room Inc
Dec My Room Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and young adults by creating personalized and healing environments within hospitals. It operates under the youth development category, focusing on youth development programs[1][5].
Founding Story
Dec My Room was founded by Susan Plank and her daughter Kendall at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The initiative began when they were asked to help a family friend, JB, who was scheduled for an extended hospital stay. Inspired by JB's love for the Texas Longhorns, they customized his hospital room with Texas Longhorn-themed decor to make his stay more comfortable and engaging[3][4].
Mission and Activities
Dec My Room's mission is to transform hospital rooms into healing spaces tailored to the interests and needs of pediatric patients. This includes both long-term pediatric patients and antepartum patients on long-term bedrest[5]. The organization achieves this through donations and volunteer efforts, often involving local businesses and communities in its fundraising events[2][4].
Fundraising Events and Partnerships
Dec My Room conducts various fundraisers throughout the year, such as the "Let’s Do Lunch" events, "Room to Grow" luncheons, and "Kick Up Your Boots for Kids." These events often involve shopping experiences, fashion presentations, and partnerships with local retailers and artists[2][4]. In addition, Dec My Room has benefited from community events, such as a 50/50 raffle during a San Francisco Sharks game[2].
Governance and Operations
The organization is governed by a diverse board of directors, which includes Susan Plank, Kiki Wilson, Beth Rivera, Holly Waltrip, and others as of August 2022[5]. The board emphasizes ethical practices, transparency, and diversity in leadership recruitment[5].
Financial Overview
Dec My Room primarily relies on contributions for funding, with minimal revenue from other sources like investment income[1]. Executive compensation forms a significant portion of expenses, with the rest allocated towards other operational costs[1]. As of the last available financial data, the organization had no liabilities and maintained a considerable amount of assets[1].
