Boy Scouts of America National Council

The Boy Scouts of America National Council, founded in 1910, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to "prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law." It is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, serving over 1 million youths as part of Scouting America.

Mission and Programs

The organization aims to develop character, citizenship, and personal fitness in young people through a variety of educational programs and outdoor activities. Participants learn leadership skills, citizenship, and how to be morally straight by following the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting programs include:

  • Cub Scouts: For youth ages 6–11.
  • Scouts BSA: Previously known as "Boy Scouts," now a coeducational program for youth between 11 and 17 years old, offering training in character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership.
  • Venturing, Sea Scouts, and Exploring: Programs designed for youth aged 14–20.

Organization Structure

The Boy Scouts of America National Council is part of a larger structure that includes local councils across the United States. Local councils are responsible for implementing Scouting programs in their respective geographic areas and are supported by a national framework that includes volunteer leaders and professional staff.

Governance

The National Council is governed by a National Executive Board, which oversees the organization's strategies, finances, and operations. The Chief Scout Executive is responsible for the day-to-day management. The board includes volunteer leaders, national officers, and regional presidents.

History

Founded by American writer W. D. Boyce in 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1916, the organization has evolved over the years. It has been a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement since 1922.

Controversies and Changes

The organization has faced various controversies throughout its history, including changes in membership policies and debates over its stance on social issues. In recent years, it has adapted by allowing girls to join Scouts BSA and adjusting membership policies to be more inclusive.

High-Adventure Bases

Scouting America operates four high-adventure bases: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and Sea Base in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. These bases provide advanced outdoor training and adventure opportunities for Scouts.

Impact

Over 130 million Americans have participated in the organization's programs since its inception, making it one of the most influential youth development organizations in the United States. Alumni include notable figures like former U.S. President Gerald Ford and astronaut Neil Armstrong.
