The George Sugarman Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 2001 to honor the legacy and wishes of George Sugarman, a prolific American artist known for his innovative sculptures and commitment to supporting emerging artists.

History

George Sugarman (1912–1999) was a groundbreaking artist who pioneered pedestal-free sculpture and experimented extensively with vividly painted metal sculptures. Throughout his career, Sugarman was dedicated to the well-being and development of young, innovative artists. Prior to his passing, he included in his will provisions for the establishment of The George Sugarman Foundation, Inc. to carry out this mission.

Foundation Work

From its inception until 2008, the George Sugarman Foundation awarded grants to emerging visual artists across the United States. The focus was on artists whose work displayed conceptual innovation and promise. Grant recipients included artists from various disciplines, with the foundation supporting over 50 artists during its active grant period. Since 2009, the foundation has shifted its focus to fulfilling Sugarman's wish to donate his artwork to American institutions, museums, and universities, ensuring that his legacy continues through these contributions.
