Encouraging news: U.S. drug overdose deaths dropped by 27,000 in 2024—the largest single-year decline in 45 years. This progress is largely attributed to expanded access to naloxone (Narcan), telehealth-based treatment, and opioid settlement funding. We know harm reduction tools save lives. But proposed federal cuts to naloxone distribution and substance use disorder treatment threaten to reverse these gains. We must protect and expand harm reduction efforts—not pull back.
