Travelers Protective Association of America
The Travelers Protective Association of America (TPAA) is a fraternal benefit society established in the United States, originally created to serve traveling salesmen and now open to members from various occupations. The organization is dedicated to providing accident benefits, promoting community service projects, and supporting child safety initiatives.
History
The TPAA was founded in January 1882 when a group of traveling salesmen convened in Chicago to discuss the challenges they faced in their profession. This led to the formal establishment of the Travelers Protective Association of the United States on June 24, 1882, in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Initially, the organization aimed to secure special concessions from hotels and transportation agencies and to advocate for its members' grievances.
In the late 19th century, the TPAA faced financial troubles, prompting it to introduce accident insurance benefits in 1890. This move successfully stabilized the organization, which then moved its headquarters from Chicago to St. Louis and adopted its current name.
Over the decades, the TPAA expanded its membership criteria. Initially limited to salesmen involved in manufacturing and wholesale businesses, it opened its doors to all male traveling salesmen aged 18 to 55 by 1979. By 1993, the TPAA accepted women as members.
As of now, the TPAA operates with a three-tiered fraternal system consisting of local chapters, state divisions, and a national organization. It has 35 state divisions and 261 local posts, with licensing to offer insurance in 38 states.
Mission and Activities
The TPAA's primary mission revolves around offering accidental injury benefits to its members, alongside fostering a sense of community through social and service activities. The organization is also committed to child safety, having initiated programs like Child Accident Prevention Week in 1946.
In addition to accident benefits, the TPAA provides financial assistance to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals through its charitable initiatives. Members are encouraged to participate in community projects and networking opportunities, which promotes personal growth and fellowship.
Membership and Structure
Membership in the TPAA is open to individuals from various occupations, and the organization has around 13,726 members as of recent reports. The structure includes local posts that facilitate community involvement, state divisions for broader coordination, and a national body that governs the association's operations.
The TPAA emphasizes the importance of community service, advocating for sanitary conditions in hotels, and supporting child safety legislation. Furthermore, local posts often award scholarships and grants to benefit their communities.
Conclusion
The Travelers Protective Association of America plays a vital role in supporting its members through accident benefits and community service initiatives. Its long-standing history reflects its adaptability and commitment to serving diverse populations, ensuring a positive impact on members and the communities they inhabit.
