“Both my husband and our oldest daughter suffered from the disease of alcoholism, and both were out of control. Today, my husband has been in recovery for over three decades, and our sweet daughter has passed, not directly from alcoholism (she had breast cancer) but certainly with it. She never reached sobriety. So why do I still need Al-Anon? Because Al-Anon is for me, not them, and I’m still changing. And because alcoholism is a family disease, and we have three other daughters who have been deeply wounded by it. “While I had the support of so many members of Al-Anon, our other three daughters refused to have anything to do with it. They did not trust their father’s sobriety, and they blamed us for their sister’s illness. I am struggling with this now as I grapple with grief over losing a daughter. I regret that she never experienced the serenity of sobriety, just as I am confused by the guilt that I could not help her.
