Polish National Alliance of the United States of North America
The Polish National Alliance of the United States of North America (PNA) is a prominent nonprofit fraternal benefit society that has been serving Americans of Polish origins and ancestry since its founding in 1880. Established by Polish patriot Agaton Giller, the organization's initial goals included advocating for the liberation of Poland and supporting Polish immigrants in the United States.
History
The PNA was founded on February 15, 1880, in Philadelphia, with Agaton Giller as its influential figure. The organization's first president was Juliusz Andrzejkowicz. Initially, the PNA aimed to unite Polish Americans in support of Poland's independence and to aid new immigrants adapting to life in the United States. Over the years, the PNA expanded its role to include the preservation of Polish culture and the provision of fraternal insurance programs to its members.
In 1886, the PNA initiated its first fraternal insurance program, marking a significant milestone in the Polish-American community. By the early 2000s, PNA members held over $800 million in insurance coverage. The organization also played a key role in cultural events such as the annual Polish Constitution Day parade in Chicago, which has been held since 1894.
Organizational Structure
The PNA operates through a structured governance system. The supreme governing body is the Sejm Związkowy (Convention), which convenes every four years. The day-to-day management is overseen by the Zarząd (Board), headed by the President of the PNA, along with the Board of Directors (Rada Dyrektorów). The organization also has a Censor, who acts as an internal auditor and is accountable directly to the Sejm.
Activities and Initiatives
Over the years, the PNA has engaged in numerous activities promoting Polish culture and education. It once owned Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, from 1912 to 1991, and established the Polish Library in Chicago. The organization has also been involved in commemorating historical figures, such as building the monument of Tadeusz Kościuszko in Washington, D.C., in 1910.
In addition to cultural endeavors, the PNA has been active in supporting international causes. During World War II, the PNA raised funds for U.S. troops, and in the aftermath, it successfully advocated for laws that facilitated the acceptance of Polish refugees into the United States.
Insurance Programs
The PNA offers a range of life insurance and annuity products designed to provide financial security to its members and their families. These programs have benefited nearly two million individuals across the United States. The organization provides both permanent and term insurance options, allowing members to choose plans that align with their specific financial needs and circumstances.
Modern Operations
Today, the PNA continues to evolve, extending its membership beyond those of Polish heritage to anyone interested in joining. It remains committed to providing quality insurance products, promoting fraternal programs, and preserving Polish cultural traditions in the United States. Despite its historical roots, the PNA operates as a modern fraternal benefit society, focusing on the well-being of its diverse membership base.
Preservation of Heritage
The Polish National Alliance Headquarters, located in Chicago's West Town neighborhood, was a significant landmark for the organization until it was relocated in the 1970s. The former headquarters building, designed in Art Deco style by Joseph A. Slupkowski, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, reflecting its importance as a cultural and architectural landmark within the Polish-American community.
