Last week, our campaign to protect children by supporting families before a crisis was attacked in an op-ed published by the Los Angeles Times. We believe every child deserves to grow up safe, supported, and with their family whenever possible. That’s why we’re setting the record straight. Read our official response to the attack—and why prevention, not punishment, is the path forward. Centering Families, Not Blame Is A Better Path Forward Children fare better with their families, in supportive communities with access to financial, relational, and environmental resources they need to thrive. After decades of family separation, we have found no better substitute than family. But our systems have responded to threats to child safety such as poverty, chronic stress, and trauma not with help—but with punishment. We’ve spent billions of taxpayer dollars on a model that prioritizes surveillance, family separation, and shame over support, yet our children are not safer. Prevention leaders recognize what families and communities have long known: child safety and family wellbeing are inextricably linked to stability. We also know that complex issues like child abuse and neglect require comprehensive approaches including an array of policies and interventions. It’s time to stop crafting a false dichotomy between investments in prevention OR intervention, families need both. This faulty narrative ultimately hurts the children and families who most need our support.
