After dozens of former lab chimpanzees were abandoned on remote estuary islands in Liberia, Humane World for Animals established the Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia / Save the Abandoned Chimps to provide humane sanctuary care for the chimps. Today, the sanctuary is working to bolster key infrastructure and increase outreach to local communities while working toward full accreditation by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). The Rainforest Foundation UK is working to strengthen community rights and conservation participation in and around Democratic Republic of the Congo's Lomami National Park, a key habitat for bonobos.
