On this day in 1944, the Avro Lincoln took to the skies for its maiden flight. Developed as a more capable successor to the Lancaster, the Lincoln featured greater range, payload, and altitude — ready to extend the RAF’s strategic reach as WWII wound down in Europe. While it was planned for deployment to the Pacific as part of Britain's "Tiger Force," Japan’s surrender came before it could see action. It became the penultimate propeller-driven bomber of the Royal Air Force, with the Avro Shackleton following in a maritime patrol role. A total of 604 Lincolns were built, serving with the RAF and other air forces into the early 1960s — marking the end of the piston-powered heavy bomber era.
