Overview
The Children's Oncology Camping Association International (COCAI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening, supporting, and connecting camps that serve individuals and families affected by childhood cancer.
History
COCAI was founded in 1982 as Children's Oncology Camps of America by fourteen pioneer oncology camps. Recognizing the benefits that camping provided to children with cancer, these camps aimed to create a forum for sharing experiences and ideas. Over time, the organization evolved into the Children's Oncology Camping Association International to include camps outside the United States.
Mission
COCAI's mission is to enhance the lives of children with cancer and their families by fostering an international community of camps. It focuses on providing a supportive network, educational opportunities, and resources to improve the quality of care and programs offered by member camps.
Activities
- Annual Conference (COCAcon): COCAI hosts an annual conference that serves as a platform for its members to network, learn from each other, and engage in continuing education. The conference covers topics such as leadership, child development, staff development, programs, fundraising, and medical education.
- Networking and Community Building: COCAI facilitates networking opportunities through townhalls and webinars. These sessions allow member camps to share experiences, challenges, and successes in managing pediatric oncology camps.
- Gold Ribbon Accreditation Program: COCAI administers a best practices program to guide camps in improving their programs, staff training, risk management, and medical policies. This accreditation helps ensure a safe and high-quality experience for children with cancer and their families.
- Educational Opportunities: COCAI provides access to professional education year-round, including webinars on the latest medical facts and best practices in pediatric oncology camping.
- Resource Access: Members benefit from access to resources and potential grants that support their programs.
Governance and Structure
COCAI operates with a structured governance framework, which includes a board of directors and specific bylaws. The organization is led by a board that oversees strategy and operations.
Membership
As of recent reports, COCAI includes 129 member camps from the United States and Canada. Membership benefits include access to educational resources, networking opportunities, and the Gold Ribbon Accreditation Program.
Impact
COCAI has been instrumental in supporting the transition to virtual programming during challenging times, providing critical guidance and resources to member camps. The organization continues to play a vital role in enhancing the experiences of children with cancer through its member camps.
