Hillsboro Historical Society (Hillsboro, New Mexico)
The Hillsboro Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Hillsboro and surrounding areas, including the Black Range, Lake Valley, and Kingston. Established in 2008, the society is an all-volunteer run 501(c)3 organization.
Mission and Activities
The society's mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of local communities to promote understanding and appreciation of their heritage. They manage the Black Range Museum and the old Sierra County Courthouse and Jail Site in Hillsboro, New Mexico.
Facilities and Projects
- Black Range Museum: Located in Hillsboro, New Mexico, the museum is a renovated adobe building. The society has completed construction of a Coach House behind the museum, designed to house the Mountain Pride Stagecoach.
- Outdoor Spaces: The society is developing outdoor areas with drought-tolerant native landscaping, themed around museum exhibits. These spaces include shaded nooks and patio areas for community events.
Publications and Events
The Hillsboro Historical Society publishes a quarterly history journal called Guajolotes, Zopilotes y Paisanos. They organize community events such as the Earthday Highway Cleanup to engage volunteers and promote local history.
