The first documented presence of Freemasonry in New York dates back to the mid-1730s, when Daniel Coxe Jr. was appointed Provincial Grand Master for the provinces of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania by Charles Howard, the 10th Duke of Norfolk, Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge of England (Moderns). However, there is no authenticated record of his tenure, casting doubt on his actual influence in Masonic affairs[1][2].

By the 1750s, the Antient Grand Lodge of England (Ancients) had also established a presence in New York, chartering lodges under its jurisdiction. After the American Revolution, the Grand Lodge of New York was formed under the Provincial Grand Warrant issued by the Antient Grand Lodge of England on September 5, 1781, and officially organized on December 15, 1782. Robert R. Livingston, who served as Grand Master from 1784 to 1801, played a significant role in the early history of the Grand Lodge of New York. He administered the oath of office to President George Washington at Federal Hall in New York City in 1789.
