Overview
The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and advancing the profession of law enforcement within the state of New Jersey. Founded in 1912, NJSACOP is committed to promoting high ethical and professional standards among New Jersey's law enforcement agencies.
History
The association was officially established with its first meeting at the Newark Court House on February 12, 1912. Elizabeth Police Department Chief George Tenney was elected as the first president of NJSACOP. Since its inception, the organization has grown to become a significant force in law enforcement development across New Jersey.
Programs and Initiatives
NJSACOP offers a wide range of educational and professional development programs aimed at enhancing leadership and management skills among law enforcement executives. Key programs include:
- NJSACOP Command & Leadership Academy: This initiative focuses on developing effective leadership and command skills among police professionals.
- NJSACOP Police Executive Institute: A program designed to further refine the executive abilities of law enforcement leaders.
- ACE COP (Accredited Chief/Command Executive) Program: A certification scheme aimed at elevating professional standards by assessing experience, education, management training, and collaboration. It replaces the former Certified Chief Law Enforcement Executive Program (CCLEEP).
- Joint Police Chiefs Forums and International Collaborations: NJSACOP collaborates with entities like the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the UK's College of Policing to host international leadership seminars.
Mission and Vision
The core mission of NJSACOP is to promote and enhance ethical and professional standards in law enforcement throughout New Jersey. Its vision is to become the preeminent voice of professional policing, fostering excellence in leadership within the state.
Membership
NJSACOP offers various membership categories, including Active Members, Law Enforcement Associate Members, Life Members, Retired Members, Private Sector Affiliate Members, and Provisional Members. These categories allow diverse stakeholders within the law enforcement and security communities to participate in the organization's activities.
Activities and Partnerships
NJSACOP regularly hosts events such as the Police/Security Expo, which brings together law enforcement professionals and vendors to showcase the latest in policing technology and services.
