Thanks to Western New Mexico University for spotlighting Carlos Carranza, one of our Golden Apple Scholars in New Mexico! Carlos is pursuing his passion for bilingual education through WNMU's 3+2 program, focusing on reading and TESOL. "The Golden Apple is an amazing program," says Carlos. "Every summer, they basically guide you through your college experience of becoming a teacher... They bring educators together to give you an insight about what you are not necessarily learning in college." Carlos values the practical classroom experience he gained last summer in Albuquerque, where he helped a teacher in an area with high poverty rates. His goal? To teach English language learners in borderland communities where he can make the greatest impact. Carlos's commitment to education stems from his own experience growing up in Hatch, NM, as a Spanish speaker. Now, as a Golden Apple Scholar in New Mexico, he's on his way to empowering the next generation of students who share his background.
