American Association of University Women
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a non-profit organization established in 1881 with the mission of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. It has a nationwide network of over 170,000 members and supporters, 1,000 local branches, and partnerships with 800 colleges and universities.
History
Founded in 1881 by Emily Fairbanks Talbot, Marion Talbot, and Ellen Swallow Richards, the organization began as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (ACA). Its early mission included challenging myths that higher education harmed women's health and promoting equal educational opportunities for women. In 1885, the ACA published "Health Statistics of Female College Graduates," which disproved the prevailing belief that college education led to infertility. The ACA merged with the Southern Association of College Women in 1921 to form the AAUW.

- Fellowships and Grants: AAUW has awarded over $135 million in fellowships and grants to more than 13,000 scholars worldwide, supporting women's education and career development.

- Policy Advocacy: The organization actively advocates for laws and policies promoting gender equity, focusing on issues such as equal pay, reproductive rights, and leadership opportunities.

AAUW continues to influence national discussions on gender equity through research and advocacy.
Mission and Vision
The organization's mission is to advance equity for women and girls through various means. Its vision is to be a leader in promoting equity and education, fostering measurable change in critical areas affecting women and girls. AAUW values diversity and inclusivity, seeking no barriers to participation regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, or other factors.
