Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) is a nonprofit organization established in 1972. It serves as a regional consortium of archivists and manuscript curators across the Mid-Atlantic states, which include Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. MARAC's primary mission is to address archival concerns pertinent to its members and to enhance the professional capabilities of archivists in these states.

Objectives and Activities

MARAC was founded to facilitate practical, action-oriented conferences and workshops that promote professional development, preservation of local historical resources, and collaboration among archivists. The organization conducts semi-annual meetings that provide diverse opportunities, including workshops and tours tailored to both novice and experienced professionals.

The conference also champions the advancement of archival education, encourages diversity and inclusion within the profession, and advocates for archival needs across its member states. MARAC actively supports its members by offering platforms for presenting research, publishing articles, and engaging in professional outreach.

Governance

The governance structure of MARAC consists of an elected Steering Committee, which includes a chairperson, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary, and several state representatives. Various committees support the administration of the organization and oversee special initiatives, including two awards programs recognizing excellence in publishing and finding aids.

Publications and Resources

Since its inception, MARAC has maintained an active publication program. The Mid-Atlantic Archivist, a quarterly newsletter, continues to provide updates and resources relevant to the archival community. Additionally, MARAC publishes technical leaflets that offer guidance on archival practices and issues.

Membership and Community Engagement

Membership in MARAC is open to individuals and institutions involved in archival work, fostering a collaborative environment. The organization promotes the exchange of information and resources among its members and encourages participation in its events.

Overall, MARAC remains a vital resource for archivists in the Mid-Atlantic region, dedicated to enhancing the profession through education, advocacy, and community building.
