Bernard Zell art teachers Gili Sherman and Shana Ryback recently showcased their innovative approaches to arts education at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) National Convention in Louisville, KY, sharing their expertise with educators from across the country and beyond. Gili’s presentation highlighted a powerful photography project from last year’s 8th grade Capstone, where students used portrait photography to tell the stories of Ukrainian refugees across different historical periods. She guided educators through the process, sharing insights on photography techniques, trauma-informed interviewing, and how student-created exhibits can serve as impactful teaching tools. Shana’s presentation focused on integrating hands-on art experiences with technology in the Lower School. She shared projects where students use apps and software to enhance their artwork and deepen cross-curricular learning—from animated self-portraits in 1st grade to 3D-printed clay stamps in 4th grade. She emphasized the importance of balancing technological advancements with tactile, hands-on creativity to support child development and meaningful artistic expression. Mifgash is one of the most meaningful traditions of 8th grade at Bernard Zell—a weeklong program that brings together our students with their peers from Kiryat Gat, Israel to build deep and lasting connections. In March, we had the privilege of hosting 10 Israeli students and their teachers, immersing them in our school, community, and city. From participating in classes and leading activities for younger students to celebrating Purim together, exploring Chicago, and welcoming Shabbat as one community, every moment of the week was filled with shared experiences and powerful connections.
