Wissahickon Valley Public Library

The Wissahickon Valley Public Library is a nonprofit public library system serving the communities of Ambler Borough, Lower Gwynedd, and Whitpain Townships in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

History

The library's origins date back to 1923 when the Ambler Public Library was established on North Main Street by the Colony Club of Ambler. Initially serving Ambler Borough and nearby townships, it later moved to Ridge and Race Streets in 1934. In the 1950s and 1960s, as suburban development increased, there was a significant reorganization of local school districts and library services. The Ambler Public Library expanded, and a new library called the Library of Whitpain was established. In 1969, the Wissahickon Valley Public Library was formally created through the merger of these libraries.

The library benefited from the support of the Wissahickon School District, which had been backing both the Ambler and Whitpain libraries. A library tax was implemented in 1970 to ensure financial stability for the library system. Rita Berk was appointed as the first professional librarian in 1973, marking a new era in professional service.

Facilities

Over the years, the library expanded its facilities and services. In 1994, the main library was relocated to a renovated building at 650 Skippack Pike, which was previously used as a roller skating rink. This new facility significantly increased the library's capacity, making the Whitpain location the main library and the Ambler site a branch.

Programs and Activities

The Wissahickon Valley Public Library is known for hosting a wide range of educational and entertainment programs, attracting thousands of attendees annually. The library offers diverse collections, digital resources, and community events, catering to the needs of its serviced communities.

Governance

The library operates under a board of directors responsible for overseeing its operation, finances, and strategic initiatives. The board emphasizes ethical governance practices and ensures that all members understand their roles and responsibilities through formal orientation and ongoing education.

Impact

The Wissahickon Valley Public Library plays a vital role in the social and educational fabric of the communities it serves. It continues to evolve, adapting to changing community needs while maintaining its commitment to providing accessible educational and cultural resources.
