Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a prominent nonprofit organization and one of the largest governing bodies of Freemasonry in the United States. It operates under the Ancient tradition, descending from the Ancient Grand Lodge of England, which was founded on June 17, 1751.

History

The foundation of Freemasonry in Texas began early in the 19th century. In 1828, Stephen F. Austin called a meeting of Masons to petition for a charter from the York Grand Lodge of Mexico, but the effort was unsuccessful due to the Mexican government's fear of Masonic liberalism and the potential for Texas independence. Despite these challenges, Masonry continued to grow in Texas. In 1835, six Masons met under an oak tree near Brazoria, leading to the formation of the first Masonic Lodge in Texas, Holland Lodge № 36 (now Holland Lodge № 1), through a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana.

Grand Lodge Establishment

The Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas was established on April 16, 1838. Its first Grand Master was Anson Jones, a prominent figure and later President of the Republic of Texas. The lodge was officially established with the installation of its officers by Sam Houston on May 11, 1838. When Texas became a U.S. state, the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas transformed into the Grand Lodge of Texas.

Purpose and Activities

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas focus on personal development and community service. They aim to take good men and make them better through the teachings and traditions of Freemasonry. Members engage in various charitable activities, including supporting children's hospitals, educational programs, and local community initiatives. These efforts reflect the fraternity's commitment to improving society and fostering brotherly love.

Membership and Governance

Membership in the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas is restricted to men who petition a Masonic Lodge of their choice. The organization operates across numerous local lodges throughout Texas, with each lodge having its own procedures while adhering to the broader principles of Freemasonry. As of 2019, the Grand Lodge of Texas reported over 69,000 members.

Headquarters

Historically, the Grand Lodge of Texas was based in Houston but relocated to Waco in 1903. Since 1949, its headquarters has been housed in the Memorial Grand Lodge Temple in Waco, a central location for Masonic activities and governance.

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas continue to play a significant role in the state's social and cultural landscape, maintaining a strong fraternal presence while contributing to community welfare.
