Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas
Overview

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a prominent fraternal organization within the state of Texas. It is part of the broader Freemasonry movement, which aims to promote moral and ethical values among its members, guiding them to become better individuals.

History

The history of Freemasonry in Texas began in 1828, when Stephen F. Austin called a meeting of Masons at San Felipe de Austin to petition for a charter. However, due to the Mexican government's opposition to Freemasonry, this effort was unsuccessful. In 1835, five Master Masons met in Brazoria and decided to seek a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana to form a lodge in Texas. This led to the establishment of Holland Lodge No. 36, which was later renamed Holland Lodge No. 1. Anson Jones, a prominent figure in Texas history, served as its first Worshipful Master.

Role in Texas History

During the Texas Revolution, Freemasons played a significant role. Notable figures like James Bonham, James Bowie, David Crockett, Almaron Dickenson, and William Barrett Travis were Freemasons who fought at the Alamo. The protective gestures extended by Masons during the conflict, such as the treatment of Susanna Dickinson, highlight the fraternity's ethical and moral commitments.

Establishment of the Grand Lodge

Following the Texas Revolution, three lodgesβ€”Holland Lodge No. 36, Milam Lodge No. 40, and McFarland Lodge No. 41β€”were instrumental in establishing the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas in 1837. After Texas became a state, this organization evolved into the Grand Lodge of Texas. Anson Jones was elected as the first Grand Master, and the Grand Lodge initially operated from Houston before moving to Waco in 1903.

Mission and Community Involvement

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas focus on personal development and community service. The organization aims to foster growth in individuals by promoting virtues such as brotherly love, relief, and truth. Masons in Texas are involved in various charitable efforts, supporting initiatives that benefit the elderly, youth education programs, and healthcare services for children.

Structure and Degrees

Freemasonry within Texas operates through a three-degree system: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. These degrees are designed to impart moral and ethical teachings, often drawing on biblical narratives. The fraternity requires its members to believe in a supreme being and an afterlife but does not specify how these beliefs should be interpreted.

EIN and Tax Status

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas are registered as a nonprofit organization with the EIN 237500142.
