The Minnesota News Council promotes fair and trustedjournalism; supports the First Amendment rights of the media and the public;encourages free and open access to government information; and provides anindependent platform for educating the public, discussing news coverage andmediating citizen complaints. The Council focuses on any medium that carries news andinformation for public consumption including newspapers, television, radio, magazines,blogs and Web sites.We believe that: A healthy democracy requires fair, vigorous and trusted news media; Interaction between the public and the news media demystifies journalistic practices, creates mutual understanding and promotes trust; Public discussion promotes media fairness effectively; Free and open access to government information is essential for active participation in democracy; Educational programs can aid the public in understanding the role of journalism in democratic society; It is important to provide journalists, working in all media, with ethical resources and professional training.
