Overview

Blacks in Government, Inc. (BIG) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1975 by a group of African American civil servants at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (now the Department of Health and Human Services). The organization was incorporated in 1976 in Washington, D.C., with the mission to advocate for equal opportunity and professional development for African Americans in government. BIG has since evolved into a pivotal force in the promotion of equity, excellence, and opportunity for its members across various government levels.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of Blacks in Government is to:

  • Advocate for equity and inclusion in public service.
  • Provide professional development and empowerment opportunities for African Americans.
  • Serve as a resource and support network for African American civil servants at municipal, state, and federal levels.
  • Address workplace and community issues affecting African Americans in public service.

Activities and Programs

Blacks in Government supports its mission through a variety of programs and initiatives, including:

  • Professional Development Training: Annual training conferences since 1978 have become a hallmark of the organization, bringing together experts and advocates to address contemporary issues impacting government employees. These conferences facilitate career development and skills enhancement, attracting over 3,000 participants annually.

  • Youth Programs: BIG runs national youth programs aimed at preparing young African Americans for future professional environments. Initiatives like the Training in Communications Program and the Information Superhighway Student Competition focus on developing essential skills in communication and computer literacy among high school students.

  • Advocacy and Support: BIG plays an essential role in advocating for policies and practices that improve workplace conditions and promote fairness for African American employees in government.

Chapters and Membership

With over 230 chapters nationwide, BIG has created a robust network of professionals dedicated to service and support within the African American community. Each chapter works towards addressing local issues while contributing to the organization's national goals of equity and empowerment.

Significant Impact

Throughout its history, Blacks in Government has been instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by African Americans in public service. The organization continues to lead initiatives that foster leadership and educational opportunities, while also promoting community engagement and outreach.
