“This work takes more than one set of hands,” said Mary Kraft, Erickson Sow 23 Manager. “It takes heart, and this team has it.” Located in Northeast Iowa near the town of Riceville, Erickson Sow 23 is home to 3,500 sows and one of the most tenured, tight-knit teams at Iowa Select Farms. Between Mary, Dean Reddel, Julie Hase, Teresa Schlotterback, Lindsay Larson, Zach Hanson, Helen Coronel Paiz, Daniela De la Cruz Ramos, Ben Doty, Esme Hernandez Perez, Cameron Mayer, and Ronnie Nightingale, the team brings years of experience. Lindsay and her breeding team—Zach and Dean—know that successful farrowing begins with excellent breeding. Week after week, they work with focus and consistency, breeding nearly 170 sows. For them, timing is everything. Estrus detection, artificial insemination, and accurate record-keeping are second nature to this crew. They take pride not only in achieving high conception rates, but in quickly identifying open animals. “We’re always looking to improve,” said Lindsay. “Every successful farrow starts with our attention to detail in breeding.” Led by Julie, the farrowing crew—Teresa, Ronnie, Cameron, Ben, Daniela, Esme, and Helen—begin their day with a quick meeting in the breakroom to discuss the day’s responsibilities and formulate a game plan. Then, they head out to the farrowing barns to check on the animals. With nearly 180 farrows per week, every team member plays a critical role in ensuring sows are comfortable and piglets are off to a strong start.” “I have a tremendous farrowing team and love that we work together really well,” said Julie. “If we are done with our work, we are helping out elsewhere on the farm, which creates good teamwork.” Under Mary’s leadership, Erickson Sow 23 has become known for its excellence, not just in numbers, but in spirit. They raise thousands of pigs each year, each one a testament to their dedication and doing something meaningful every single day. “We’re not just raising pigs,” said Mary Kraft. “We’re raising the future.” Here’s to the team at Sow 23 – thank you for setting the standard in care, commitment, and teamwork. Keep up the great work! (fb)

“I never imagined my career would turn into this,” said Dean Reddel, a Heat Check/AI Specialist celebrating 25 years. “What started as a job turned into something I’m truly proud of.” Dean, who was born and raised in Riceville, takes great pride in living and working in the community he’s always called home. Growing up on a farm with cattle, pigs, and chickens, Dean developed a strong connection to agriculture early in life. From a young age, he understood the value of hard work and the importance of caring for animals. “It’s not glamorous work,” Dean said. “But it’s work that matters. These animals depend on us daily.” Dean began his journey with Iowa Select Farms at Erickson Sow 23 in 1999 and still proudly calls it "home." Through snowstorms, hot Iowa summers, and many industry changes, Dean has remained constant to his farm and the company. For Dean, it’s not just about work, it’s about the people who make each day meaningful. Throughout the years, many individuals have become like family. Together, they’ve weathered challenges, celebrated milestones, and built a culture of mutual respect and support. “I value the camaraderie we’ve built at this farm,” he said. “And we owe it all to her,” pointing to Mary Kraft, the farm’s longtime manager. “She’s the best.” Outside of work, Dean enjoys spending time outdoors. Whether camping, fishing, sitting around the fire during summer evenings, or snowmobiling through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the winter with his sons, he makes the most of every moment. Family is especially important to Dean, and he cherishes time with his children and grandchildren and feels fortunate they live nearby, allowing “Papa Dean” to be present as they grow up. Congratulations, Dean! Thank you for 25 incredible years of dedication, animal care, and loyalty. We’re proud to have you on our team. (fb)
