4-H Clubs & Affiliated 4-H Organizations
Background
4-H Clubs and affiliated organizations are part of a broader network of youth development programs administered by the Cooperative Extension Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These organizations are designed to engage youth in experiential learning experiences that foster citizenship, leadership, and life skills.
Mission and Purpose
The mission of 4-H is to empower young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. This is achieved through programs focused on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology. The 4-H motto is "To make the best better," and its guiding principles include the 4 Hs: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.
Legal Status
Formally authorized 4-H clubs and affiliated organizations, operating under the control of Cooperative Extension, are eligible for inclusion under a special federal tax exemption status similar to Section 501(c)(3) organizations. However, they are not classified as traditional 501(c)(3) entities due to their association with the federal government. Donors to these organizations may deduct contributions under applicable IRS regulations.
Programs and Activities
4-H offers a diverse range of programs and activities tailored to various age groups, from Cloverbuds for younger children to collegiate clubs for university students. These programs are delivered through a network of local clubs, in-school and after-school programs, and 4-H camps. Youth participants engage in hands-on projects that align with their interests and are guided by adult mentors.
Reach and Impact
With nearly six million members in the United States, 4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in the country. Its programs are delivered via partnerships with public universities and local community organizations. The organization's reach extends to every county and parish, providing opportunities for young people to develop critical life skills and contribute positively to their communities.
Partnerships and Support
4-H receives support from various partners and foundations that help enhance its programs. These partnerships focus on areas like financial literacy, diversity and equity, civic engagement, and STEM education, ensuring that 4-H remains a leader in positive youth development.
Tax Exempt Status and Financial Operations
The tax-exempt status of 4-H clubs and affiliated organizations pertains to federal income tax and does not automatically exempt them from state or local taxes. Organizations seeking inclusion under this status must be formally recognized and operate under the guidance of Cooperative Extension. Contributions to these entities are tax-deductible, supporting their mission to engage youth in meaningful educational experiences.
