This year marks 100 years since the end of Waupaca's trolley line. In 1925, after 26 years of service, the Waupaca Electric and Light Railway trolley ran its last trip to the Grand View Hotel and Wisconsin Veterans Home. During those years, the trolley ran year-round, though its busiest times were in the summer, giving rides to tourists and residents heading out to the Chain O'Lakes. But, with the rise of automobiles and growing expenses for repairs on the trolley line, the Waupaca Electric and Light Railway decided to close. In fall 1925, the City made plans to pave over the tracks on Main and Water Streets, while the other tracks on the line were removed. The only remaining car from the trolley line is the baggage car, which is on display at the Waupaca Historical Society's Depot in the Car Barn. (fb)

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are forever grateful for their sacrifice. As part of our observance, the Commandant’s House will be open to the public from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. We invite you to stop by after the services at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery and learn more about our efforts to preserve the story of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at the Commandant's House. Keeping History AliveWaupaca and the Chain OLakes About 100000 years ago much of North America was covered in glaciers. As these glaciers moved they carved hills bluffs lakes and rivers into the landscape. By 10000 BCE the first peopleancestors of the Menomineehad reached Wisconsin with some settling around Waupaca and the Chain OLakes. The Waupaca area along with the Chain OLakes were long home to the Menominee Indian tribe and are the ancestral homeland of the Menominee peoples.
