Home | Waupaca Historical Society Keeping History AliveWaupaca and the Chain OLakes About 100000 years ago much of North America was covered in glaciers. As these glaciers moved they carved hills bluffs lakes and rivers into the landscape. By 10000 BCE the first peopleancestors of the Menomineehad reached Wisconsin with some settling around Waupaca and the Chain OLakes. The Waupaca area along with the Chain OLakes were long home to the Menominee Indian tribe and are the ancestral homeland of the Menominee peoples.

This year marks 100 years since the end of Waupaca's trolley line. In 1925, after 26 years of service, the Waupaca Electric and Light Railway trolley ran its last trip to the Grand View Hotel and Wisconsin Veterans Home. During those years, the trolley ran year-round, though its busiest times were in the summer, giving rides to tourists and residents heading out to the Chain O'Lakes.

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We are forever grateful for their sacrifice. As part of our observance, the Commandant’s House will be open to the public from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
