May 22 is the American College of Surgeons’ National Stop the Bleed Day! Learning to stop the bleed is a life-saving skill. The No. 1 cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. With three quick actions, you can be trained and empowered to save a life. To stop bleeding, apply firm pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. Keep pressing until the bleeding slows or stops. If blood soaks through the material, do not remove it; instead, add more layers on top. Elevate the injured area if possible. For serious bleeding, call emergency services immediately. Lurie Children’s Trauma Center, EMS and Emergency Departments have taught hundreds of kids and adults with Stop the Bleed Training.
