The Apprenticeshop

Located in Midcoast Maine, we offer programs in boatbuilding, adult and youth sailing classes. The mission of The Apprenticeshop is to inspire personal growth through craftsmanship, community and traditions of the sea. Using the model of experiential education, students acquire skills through direct, hands-on experience. On the first day of sailing class, a beginner is at the tiller. On the first day of an apprenticeship, an apprentice cuts into a piece of wood. “Learning-by-doing” develops self-esteem, perseverance, self-reliance and patience – valuable tools our graduates keep for the rest of their lives.

About the organization

- B60, O50 -

We are a community that cultivates thinkers makers and doers through traditional boatbuilding and seamanship to navigate an everchanging world. Head heart hands. The Apprenticeshop was founded by educator Lance Lee in 1972 within the complex of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath Maine. It became a catalyst for the revival of traditional wooden boatbuilding at a time when the craft and the apprentice way of learning were deemed to be extinct.
