This Day in Marine Corps History — The Battle of Belleau Wood June 1–26, 1918 Amid the wheat fields and shell-torn trees near the Marne River in France, U.S. Marines etched their legacy in fire and blood during the Battle of Belleau Wood. Fighting side-by-side with French and British forces, Marines of the 2nd and 3rd Divisions launched bayonet-charged assaults through open fields, repelled German counterattacks, and captured strategic ground at enormous cost. More than 9,700 American casualties, including 1,800+ killed, cemented this battle as one of the Corps' bloodiest — and proudest — chapters. For their valor, the French renamed the woods Bois de la Brigade de Marine, and generations of Marines still wear the French fourragère in honor of those who fought there. It was in Belleau Wood that the legend of the “Devil Dogs” was born — a testament to Marine courage that echoes to this day. The photo shows U.S. Marine Corps Gen.
