🦕 In the 1950s, artist Jay Matternes apprenticed with then Chief Staff Artist of Carnegie Museum of Natural History Ottmar von Fuehrer. Matternes would go on to have an accomplished career in natural history illustration and recalls sketching many mammals and more for the natural history museum in his early days. Today, those artworks are still preserved by the museum, keeping Matternes' early work alive.
