First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA), now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society that was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1892. It was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant homemakers, with the encouragement of Father Stephen Furdek, to provide death and injury benefits to protect families from the hazards of industrial labor[2][3].
History
FCSLA was created at a time when women were considered second-class citizens, and it aimed to address the financial insecurity faced by Slovak immigrant families. By the end of its first year, the organization had grown from 9 to 95 members, with assets increasing from $77 to $212[2]. Over the years, FCSLA has expanded its services and membership, celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2017 with over 115,000 members and operations in 48 states and the District of Columbia[4].
Activities and Impact
The organization provides life insurance and annuities to its members while promoting Catholic values and Slavic traditions. FCSLA has supported various charitable activities and community projects throughout the United States. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO from 2012 to 2025, the organization achieved significant financial growth, expanding its insurance in force and assets to over $1 billion[5]. FCSLA also offers a range of scholarships and community development programs.
Leadership and Recognition
Cynthia M. Maleski has been instrumental in FCSLA's growth, expanding its branches and implementing strategic initiatives for long-term sustainability. Her contributions have been recognized nationally, including receiving the Pope Francis Leadership International Papal Award. As of 2025, FCSLA Life is led by a new CEO, Michael J. Agan, who is committed to upholding the organization's values of Family, Faith, and Financial Security[5].
FCSLA Life maintains an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best, reflecting its financial strength and stability[3]. The organization continues to be a prominent figure in the Slovak-American community, fostering cultural heritage and providing financial security to its members.
