AMP is pleased to feature the Village of Seville and its 111-year-old #PublicPower utility in our Member spotlight. Located in northeastern Ohio, Seville is situated in Medina County and has been an AMP Member since 1972. Founded in 1816 by New Englander Henry Hosmer, the village is thought to be named after Seville, Spain. The community officially became a village in 1828. Many buildings in Seville are more than 100 years old, dating back to when the Interurban streetcar system connected many Ohio towns. Travelers could take an electric streetcar from Cleveland through Seville to Columbus. As automobiles became a more popular transportation choice, the Interurban streetcar system was deactivated. Today, Seville is home to about 2,300 residents. The world’s tallest married couple, Martin and Anna Bates, who were both well over 7 feet tall, moved to Seville in 1873 shortly after getting married. The couple moved to a farm by Chippewa Lake, about 5 miles from Seville because Anna had tuberculosis, and her doctor told her to live near fresh water.
