Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America
The Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America is an appendant Masonic organization focused on fostering friendship, fellowship, and fraternity among Master Freemasons in good standing. Founded on March 18, 1902, in Trenton, New Jersey, this body emphasizes social interaction and charitable endeavors, particularly in supporting research into muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.
History
The concept of the Tall Cedars dates back to the early 1840s, when Master Masons developed a side degree known as "The Ancient and Honorable Rite of Humility." This degree involved a ceremonial initiation that included elements of playfulness and camaraderie. Over time, the organization evolved into a formal entity designed to stabilize and preserve these fraternal ceremonies.
In 1971, the organization officially adopted the name Tall Cedars of Lebanon of North America, reflecting its expansion into Canada. By 2023, the organization's name had evolved further to Tall Cedars of Lebanon International, reflecting its growth across North America and into other countries like Mexico, El Salvador, and Brazil.
Organization
The basic unit of the Tall Cedars is the Forest, each headed by a Grand Tall Cedar. These Forests are primarily located in the eastern United States, with New Jersey and Pennsylvania being central to their activities. The Supreme Forest, the national governing body, is based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The organization offers additional side degrees, including the Royal Court and the Sidonian, and features units such as the marching band known as the Royal Rangers. Members are easily recognizable by their distinctive pyramid-shaped hats.
Charitable Activities
The Tall Cedars' main charity focus is the Tall Cedar Foundation, which supports research into muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases. Since 1951, the organization has actively collaborated with the Muscular Dystrophy Association to advance research and support affected families. By redirecting efforts in 2023, the Tall Cedars now focus on supporting children and families at the local level.
Style and Motto
The organization's motto, "Fun, Frolic, & Fellowship," encapsulates its lighthearted yet meaningful approach to Masonic fraternal life. The use of symbolic attire, such as pyramidical hats in different colors for various roles, adds to the festive and fraternal atmosphere.
