At 39, Sachin was working as a full-time anesthesiologist in his hometown of Sea Cliff, Long Island when he noticed a change in his bowel habits. His colleague urged him to get a colonoscopy. Shortly after waking up from his procedure, Sachin received devastating news: He had stage 4 colorectal cancer. Sachin immediately sought care at MSK. “I knew MSK was the best of the best,” he shares. “I didn’t want to feel like an anomaly at other places, and I wanted to be somewhere that sees people like me every day.” He met with gastrointestinal medical oncologist Dr. Louise Connell at MSK Commack and began treatment which included five cycles of chemotherapy. He then underwent a major surgery in September 2023—colon resection, partial liver resection, and removal of part of his gallbladder. After four months of recovery along with post-operative chemotherapy, Sachin was declared cancer free in March 2024. Before his surgery, his wife surprised him by arranging for his favorite cycling instructors to give him a call wishing him strength and good luck. As a dedicated rider, their encouragement meant the world to him. Today, Sachin gives back by riding for Cycle for Survival which helps to raise funds for rare cancer research, and serves on MSK’s Patient & Family Advisory Council for Quality (PFACQ), a group focused on elevating care through the patient perspective. “Coming to MSK saved my life. Being part of PFACQ is my way to pay it forward,” he says. “I get to support others as both a doctor and a survivor.” Now back at work, Sachin says the experience has reshaped his life. He feels more present as a father and husband and is continuing the practices that helped him heal during his treatment. “Fitness helped my mind and body heal and talking with others helped me process.
