Nearly half a million San Diegans do not know where their next meal is coming from. Low income seniors, disabled persons, military families, and others in need struggle to keep food on the table. Children make up 40% of those who depend on food banks. Simultaneously, highly processed, high calorie, low nutrient, cheap foods are readily accessible at corner markets and liquor stores, establishments commonly found in low income communities. This creates a food culture devoid of quality nutrition, leaving those in need filled with calories, yet hungry. Food insecure Americans are more likely to be obese, diabetic, and hypertensive - all conditions that are directly impacted by food. How can we have a nation that is over fed, yet undernourished? SuperFood Drives believes we can do better.SuperFood Drive aims to Give the Gift of Health by turning all food drives into HEALTHY food drives, providing nutrient dense non-perishable food to populations in need. While it's known that food drives will not end hunger, they do make a tremendous impact. In 2015, over 1.2 MILLION pounds of food were donated to the two major San Diego food banks from community food drives. The overwhelming majority of of the donations were high salt, high sugar, lower nutrient foods (think ramen and sugary cereals). What if all 1.2 million pounds were whole grain, lean protein, healthy fat, high nutrient foods? What would that do for the health of our neighbors in need? This is a game-changer for community hunger relief efforts. The donor is empowered with an opportunity to both help decrease hunger and improve the health of the children, families, and seniors dependent on food banks for weekly meals. The donor also learns about nutritious nonperishables, giving them the knowledge they need to stock their own pantry with healthy choices. Mission: Working with partner organizations, SuperFood Drive educates the community about the health benefits of eating nutrient-dense superfoods and works to ensure the accessibility of healthy food to all people, especially those in need.Geographic Area Served: Based in San Diego, SuperFood Drive partners with hunger relief agencies across the US and has presented the need for healthy hunger relief at local, state, national, and international conferences.
