How did the quest for faithfully reproducing sound on the radio not only transcend scientific boundaries but also give rise to one of the twentieth century's most significant electronic instruments? In his recent book “Broadcasting Fidelity: German Radio and the Rise of Early Electronic Music” (Princeton University Press, 2024), Myles Jackson, Albers-Schönberg Professor in the History of Science in the School of Historical Studies, charts an unexpected journey from scratchy broadcasts to musical innovation. This February, Jackson delivered a lecture demonstration in concert with the Jasper String Quartet and Maria Brea, soprano to elegantly highlight key arguments from the research, including the difficulties experienced by early German radio listeners when live performances were transmitted by means of this emerging technology. 🔗 Watch the full lecture demonstration here: https://youtu.be/QfAh-118Fbc 📷: Maria O'Leary Photography (fb)
